Charles E. Fry, 87, Galion, passed away suddenly on Thursday, March 29, 2018 at home.
Charlie was born in Galion, Ohio on December 18, 1930. He was the son of the late Charles and Velma (Tisher) Fry. He was also preceded in death by his fathers second wife Emma (Ferguson) Fry.
Charlie grew up in Morrow County on a farm, he attended Northmor Local Schools and graduated from Iberia High School in 1949. He joined the U.S. Army in July 1949 and served in Japan at Sugamo Prison and U.S. Army Stockade (as a Jailer) until November 1952. Upon his return he went to Chicago and attended Allied Tech. Receiving an Associate’s Degree in Tool & Die Engineering. He Married Eileen R. (Woogerd) Fry on May 15, 1954, in Angola, Indiana and she preceded him in death on April 7, 2004.
Upon his return to Galion, he worked at North Electric – United Utility, and ITT from 1955 until 1989. He was a lifelong Galion resident and was a life member of the American Legion Scarborough Post #243 and Amvets Post #1979. He also, was a member of the Moose Lodge 303, AARP and U.S. 8th Army Sugamo Prison reunion association. Charlie was a die-hard sports fan and was loyal to all Ohio sports teams. He was a devoted family man.
Surviving are two daughters, Victoria and Weldon (Les) Mason, Pamela and Ivan Phelps, and daughter-in-law, Vickie Fry, all of Galion; seven grandchildren, Jason and Kelly Phelps, Karey Gifford and Brandon Brewer, Melissa and Adam Castle, Chad and Abbie Phelps, Whitney Bonen and Matt Stranski, Cory Fry, Madison Dretzka; 10 great-grandchildren, Zachary Phelps, Lynnea Phelps, Haley Phelps, Kennedy Gifford, Paisley Brewer, Hudson Brewer, Tyler Castle, Paige Castle, Riley Bonen, Leah Bonen; and brother, Joel and Shirley Fry of Galion.
In addition to his wife, he is preceded in death by a son, James E. Fry, his sister and brother-in-law, Gerry and Merle Fridlington; sister and brother-in-law, Iris and Doyle Bachelder; sister, Doris Fry, and sister-in-law, Sharon Fry, brother, Clifford Wayne Fry.
Friends may call Monday, April 2, 2018 from 2pm – 4pm and 6pm – 8pm at the Schneider-Gompf Funeral Home, 303 Portland Way North, Galion. Funeral services will be held at 11am on Tuesday, April 3, 2018 at Schneider-Gompf Funeral Home, Galion, with Pastor Joe Stafford officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Galion. Military honors will be conducted by the US Army and the Galion/Crestline Joint Veteran’s Burial Detail.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in care of the funeral home.
