Dolores A. Zawada, 94, a longtime Utica resident, passed away peacefully Friday, March 23, 2018 at the Charles T. Sitrin Healthcare Center. She was born in Utica on September 29, 1923 the daughter of John and Agnes Kilar Gladwin.
She graduated from local schools, including St. Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing. She earned her Bachelor’s Degree from Syracuse University School of Nursing. Dolores was as U.S. Army Veteran, having served from 1945-1947 as an Army nurse with the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. She was employed as a visiting registered nurse with the Oneida County Dept. of Health.
Dolores was united in marriage to John Zawada on September 11, 1954 in Holy Trinity Church, where they were both parishioners.
Her survivors include her beloved husband John Zawada and their daughter Carol Docherty of Utica; two sons and their wives, Mark and Kattie Zawada of VA, and John and Carolyn Zawada of Clifton Park. Also surviving are her four grandchildren, Andrew and Anastasia Docherty ,Kristopher Zawada, and Johanna Zawada as well as her brother and sister –in- law, Donald and Wanda Gladwin of NC as well as many nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial which will be concelebrated by her nephew, Rev. Paul Drobin, on Tuesday at 10am at Holy Trinity Church. Those that wish may call on Monday from 2 until 5pm at the Kowalczyk Funeral Home, 1156 Lincoln Avenue, Utica. Burial with Military Honors will take place in Holy Trinity Cemetery.
The family of Dolores would like to express their sincere appreciation to Rev. Paul Drobin for his longtime spiritual support and the nurses and staff of the Mulberry House of Charles T. Sitrin Healthcare Center for the excellent care she received throughout her stay.
Dolores shared her appreciation for education throughout her life. Memorial contributions in her name may be made to the Scholarship Fund for Samantha Scibior of Notre Dame Elementary School 11 Barton Avenue, Utica, NY 13501.
