Obituary of Secondo Mastrobattista
Secondo, (Sam Mastrobattista) died peacefully on Sunday March 25, 2018 with his family by his side. Sam was born in Bernardsville on May 24th, 1932 and was raised in the Little Italy section of the borough. He attended school in Bernardsville, and enjoyed an outstanding experience playing football for Bernards High School under Coach Al Jacobson. He led the state in scoring in 1950, and graduated from Bernards High. Sam was inducted into the Bernards High School Hall of Fame.
After playing semi-professional football, Sam joined the U.S. Army where he served in Korea. He was honorably discharged before returning home in 1952. In 1957 he met Darliene Kitchen, and together they raised 5 children. Sam was an active member and Business Agent of Laborers Local 232 before his retirement. He enjoyed playing golf and his time at the Jersey Shore but his true enjoyment came from his many years watching his grandchildren participate in their extracurricular activities at Bernards, Bridgewater-Raritan and Watchung Hills High Schools.
Sam was predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Darliene, in 2014. He is survived by his children Michael, Bruce, Sandra Gover (Jim), Glenn (Jill) and Darla Della Rovere (Tony). He leaves his ten grandchildren, Michael, Adam, Brenton (Mastro), Chelsea, Brendan (Gover), Nicholas , Matthew, Jillian (Mastrobattista) and Samantha, Kyle (Della Rovere).
Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday March 28, 2018 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Bernardsville at 10:00am, followed by burial at Holy Cross Cemetery, Basking Ridge. Memorial Visitation will be held later the same day at Gallaway and Crane Funeral Home, 101 S. Finley Basking Ridge from 5:00 – 7:00pm.
